This method covers the determination of the kinematic viscosity of liquid petroleum products both transparent and opaque, by measuring the time for a volume of liquid to flow under gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer. The dynamic viscosity n can be obtained by multiplying the measured kinematic viscosity by the density of the liquid. This method is primarily intended for application to liquids for which the shear stress and shear rates are proportional. The method depends on the behaviour of the sample, and also includes the determination of the kinematic viscosity of fuel oils which often exhibit non-Newtonian properties. This method may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment, and it does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use.
