Gives the general terms and definitions and determines the general design characteristics of ladders, which are important for handling, safety, and manufacturing of the ladders and informative for the user. Applies to portable ladders; does not apply to ladders for special professional use (for example, roof ladders, fire-brigade ladders and mobile ladders).
