The heat for welding (resistance heat, Joule heat) is produced by the passage of electric current through the electrical resistance at the weld zone. Welding is carried out either with or without force being applied to the electrodes and with or without filler metal being used. The processes may be classified according to the manner in which the current is passed to the workpiece and to the welding procedure, and according to the type of current and the rate of change in current intensity and force.
