Part of a group of standards for metropolitan and local networks, that deals with the Physical and Data Link layers as covered by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Basic Reference Model (ISO/IEC 7498-1:1994). This defines seven types of medium access technologies and associated physical media, each covering for system objectives or particular applications, others are under investigation.
