This document, together with ISO 14688-2, sets out the basic principles for the designation, description and classification of soils on the basis of characteristic properties commonly required for the treatment of civil engineering issues. Since the relevant properties might vary, more detailed breakdowns of descriptive and classifying terms may be required for particular projects and soil materials. This document specifies methods for the designation and description of soil materials using visual and manual methods based on a flexible system for use by experienced persons, which includes both the properties of soil and soil components. Typical characterizing features are described from which soil materials can be identified and commonly used descriptive terms. The results of the field trials are part of the descriptive procedure. This document applies to the description of soil materials in civil engineering that are natural or artificial, or that contain artificial components.
