Gives syntax rules for the preparation of messages to be interchanged be between partners in commerce, transport, and administration. Specifies the A and B syntax levels, which are identical apart from the character sets used. Deals with character sets, structures, compressing, repetition, nesting of segments, and representation of numeric data element values.
