Provides a method for determining the effective depth of hardening (DS) of steel after flame or induction hardening. Suitable for steels having hardened layers with a depth greater than 0.3mm; steel products or components which, in the surface hardened condition at a distance of 3 x DS from the surface, have a hardness less than the hardness limit - 100, where the hardness limit is 0.80 x minimum surface hardness (in HV) or greater providing a higher hardness limit is chosen for the assessment of the effective hardening depth.
