Covers string insulator units of the cap and pin type with insulating parts of ceramic material or glass for a.c. overhead lines with nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V and frequency no greater than 100 Hz. Also covers insulators of similar design in substations. Does not apply to insulators used in areas of heavy pollution or extreme environmental conditions. (Definition of pollution levels is given in IEC 815.)
