Replaced by BS EN 81-1:1998 but remains current until the implementation of the EU Lift Directive. Until 1 July 1999 new lift installations can conform to either this British Standard or to BS EN 81-1:1998. After 1 July 1999 BS 5655-1:1986, together with BS 5655-11:1989 will apply only for modernization of existing lift installations and BS EN 81-1:1998 will apply to all new installations.
