As a general rule, the thinness of a wall in vessel design and construction is characterized by the relationship of radius to wall thickness, i.e. r/t. The field of application of thin-walled cylindrical tower silos of steel is however restricted to the wall thicknesses between 0,75 and 4 mm, because special conditions apply both in respect of construction and corrosion protection, and also in respect of permissible stresses. Thin-walled silos are as a general rule subject to easy deformation because of their low flexural strength. Such deformations are likely to occur if the horizontal loads arising from the fill material are not distributed uniformly.
