Describes safety rules for the construction and installation of permanently installed new electric lifts, with traction or positive drive, serving defined landing levels, having a car designed for the transportation of persons or persons and goods, suspended by ropes or chains and moving between guide rails inclined not more than 15 degrees to the vertical.

Replaces notes:
Replaces BS 5655-1:1986 which remains current until the implementation of the EU Lift Directive. Until 1 July 1999 new lift installations can conform to either this British Standard or to BS 5655-1:1986. After 1 July 1999 BS 5655-1:1986, together with BS 5655-11:1989 will apply only for modernization of existing lift installations and this standard will apply to all new installations.
